REVIEW ON HISTORIOGRAPHY ON DARJEELING
The discussion is relevant and rich in many ways but requires a discussion of the theoretical background of the practice of regional history. The practice of regional history is a product of postmodern theory. It is important to inform the reader about the survival of the subject. E.g. … ... What is the impact of postmodernism made on historiography? For one it has not stopped with mere denunciations of conventional history; it has developed its own genres of historical writing and produced a rich crop of them in a short time. The main features of Postmodernist historiography are… ... Local Narratives …….Local narratives (term formulated by Lyotard) are a kind of historical work that have come in the wake of the postmodernist rejection of grand or master narratives as hegemonic stories told by those in power. They are generally accounts of forms of resistance - individual stories told by prisoners, students, peasants and others. Subjective in nature, they do not lay claim to objective historical truth or universal validity. Yet postmodernist theory holds that it is a mass of such local narratives that must constitute history.
The history of the emergence of the hill town of Darjeeling has been briefly discussed. A more detailed discussion is needed.
A small tract of land measuring only 26 square miles, located in the foothills of the Himalayas and known in English documents as East Morang, but surrounded by plains, river-washed shawls, teak, shishu, shirish, dense forests, the government of neighboring Nepal, Sikkim and the Company started activities from the middle. Another feature of the region is that it has a lot of easy access to the mountains from plain India. Not that the East India Company was an initiative at the outset, because the East India Company was so preoccupied with the problems of the Marathas, Ayodhya, and Karnataka that they did not realize the importance of this small northern border region in their plans.
The outlook, however, changed in the fourth decade of the nineteenth century, with the Company Government gradually realizing the importance of the region after its transfer from Darjeeling, Sikkim in 1835. In fact, all the roads to Darjeeling and Sikkim belong to this region. Although the southern part of the Rangit River and the eastern part of the Kahil and the western part of the Mahanadi were handed over in 1835, the organization of the present Darjeeling district is an important step in the organization of the later events and the right of East Morang. In the last phase, the organization of Darjeeling district was completed in 175 when Kalimpong was handed over from Bhutan under a condition of the Nimchula Treaty. Kalimpong became part of Bhutan not only through Bhutan but also through military rights. It also needs to be made clear that Kalimpong has not included attacks on Bhutan's normal political borders for a long time. The territory was annexed by Bhutan in 1800 when Bhutan invaded Sikkim.
The way in which the merit-based history of Darjeeling has been written is quite good,
but the history of Darjeeling and the Gorkha movement have been researched by Mr. Soumen Nag, his book is not mentioned in any way. In his book 'Prasanga Gorkhaland', he discusses the political, economic and social origins of the Gorkha Land movement. Not only Harimohan Sanyal, but also Nalinikanta Majumder, who has written a book in Bengali about the hill tribes of Darjeeling, and Tarapada Bandopadhyay - Darjeeling Prabasi Patra have written a wonderful book on Darjeeling. Their names should also be added.
In addition to Madhuporni
The Darjeeling issue of Madhuparni magazine edited by Ajitesh Bhattacharya deserves special mention. There is also a sincere attempt to portray the multidimensional history of Darjeeling.
Overall, the discussion needs to be enriched.
